We're constantly keeping our eye out for new and inspiring interior projects around the globe. This week, we're enchanted by the Tufton Street apartment by Studio Mills, a mid-century modern dwelling located in Westminster, London. Flaunting rich textures with modern accents, the home acts primarily as a backdrop for the owner's impressive collection of artworks, as well as oozing comfort, a must-have when being home to a young family.
Flaunting stunning parquet floors that are dressed with a mixture of modern and exotic rugs, and also showstopping vintage pieces including a Karl Springer lamp, there's no doubt that every minor detail has been carefully considered. We're especially impressed by the unlikely marriage of materials, included luxe marble pieces, velvet textures and cedar wood.
It's a project that showcases the union of the charming old and the shiny new, affirming that alternative eras can exist in perfect harmony.
Get the look at home:
- Pair old century accents (wooden floors, cabinets, etc) with modern materials such as marble, chrome, and/or brass. Mixing metal finishes adds dimension and interest to a space, however, there is a fine line between looking chic versus looking naff.
- 1. Choose a dominant metal, whether it be gold, brass or chrome. This will create an overall sense of unity.
- 2. Blend warm and cool tones, i.e a modern stainless steel kitchen with a vintage brass chandelier. The same goes for a warm gold and white space, adding a pop of silver/chrome will ensure metallic equilibrium.
- 3. Lastly, warm metals like gold, brass and copper pair well with warm hues such as red, brown and yellow. Cool metals such as chrome and silver pair well with cool hues including blue, green and violet.
- Embrace rich textures and fabrics. This apartment echoes a velvet theme which is featured on the drapes and the couch. While you can certainly overdo it, the alluring nature of velvet brings a sense of 'home' to an otherwise modern scheme.
- Feature colour. Choose a couch in a sultry navy, or, choose brightly coloured lamps, cushions, and/or ornaments to add a point of difference to the overall scheme.
- Inject an exotic element for fun, whether it be a piece of art, sculpture, or faded Tuscan rug. Displaying pieces from far-flung destinations is an easy way to give a home personality.
